Pilates combines intelligent exercise and mindful movement which can be used alone or to complement other sports and exercise methods. This contemporary approach to the original method uses modern techniques and is one of the safest and most effective methods of training available.
Some of the many benefits include:
  • Postural improvements
  • Develops flexibility and mobility
  • Increases core strength
  • Helps prevent injury
  • Improves balance and coordination
  • Heightens body awareness
  • No-impact, easy on the joints
Pilates was first developed nearly 100 years ago and it has been constantly refined ever since. STOTT Pilates is a contemporary approach to the original system. It is often considered ‘the ivy league’ of Pilates and at RP Fitness you will only have instructors who are STOTT trained and qualified to work with you.
During a 1-2-1 session, you will benefit from having exercises that are selected precisely for your posture and goals. You will be trained in our Cambridge gym in a private Pilates studio where you also have the advantage of being able to use a range of Pilates equipment that can enhance your understanding and offer unique challenges to the principles of this system.

The equipment can make up a large portion of the repertoire and should not be underestimated. The various apparatus can help you learn a movement and assist the exercise or it can change the angle or resistance to further challenge you.
The reformer is probably the most recognisable. This is extremely versatile and can make a dramatic change in your body when you use it. The sliding carriage, springs, straps and vertical frame mean that your strength, stamina, coordination and balance can be trained in any and all directions. Its versatility makes this a favourite (despite it looking a little intimidating at first glance). There are many other attachments and it can be combined with other equipment making it suitable for anyone, at any level of fitness. It’s no wonder the full name of the reformer is the universal reformer.
The various barrels can alter the range of motion and position used in exercises making the arc barrel, spine corrector and ladder barrel valuable additions to an individuals progress. These barrels can bring a whole new dimension to the exercises, simplifying some moves whilst increasing the difficulty on others.
Then, there is the stability chair, this deceptively challenging piece requires full concentration and respect but in return can be devastatingly effective and like the equipment already mentioned can be used facing or laying in all directions challenging muscles you didn’t even know you had. It may be one of the toughest ones to master but it has a soft side too. It can be a fantastic tool to use for rehabbing knees, improving balance and a great machine for pregnant women or anyone who struggles to lay in certain positions.
The mat work is, of course, used extensively and once mastered can offer challenges to even the most advanced people. It is usually the case people advance much faster and really ‘get it’ when combined with the equipment. Pilates is often called a practice and not a performance, it is never a compromise and any benefits you see and feel will enhance every aspect of your day and whilst regular practice is recommended the results are incredibly fast with lasting improvements.
These sessions can equally compliment your fitness goals or be used alongside sport therapy sessions and are available to members and non-members of RP Fitness.
