Sports massage can be a great way to deal with tension (sometimes called ‘trigger points’, ‘adhesions’ or ‘knots’). Massage has also been proven to reduce pain, including DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and treat injuries. People often associate Sports Massage with pain. Sports Massage DOES NOT have to be sore to be effective! However when treating areas that already hurt or are overly sensitive then it there may be some discomfort.
The intention is NOT to make the massage hurt just for the sake of it but to ensure that the desired effect, healing and recovery is achieved.Depending on the most suitable treatment we can combine sports massage with other methods or use different techniques as an alternative approach. Other techniques that can be used in a treatment can involve stretching and osteopathic joint articulation. These are gentle ways to restore movement and reduce pain in an area and can be done from a range of positions to suit.
These techniques can progress to Spinal Manipulation (despite the name these techniques can be applied to other areas of the body) and can help restore normal range to a joint and has been proven to be highly effective in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions and is promoted by N.I.C.E the national institute of clinical excellence for the treatment of lower back pain.We also offer Medical Acupuncture (Dry needling). This is an adaptation of the traditional Chinese medicine method (TCM) using modern, up-to-date knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Acupuncture is considered one of the safest treatments and is incredibly effective in the treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.Acupuncture stimulates the nerves in skin and muscle and can produce a variety of effects.
We know that Acupuncture increases the body’s release of natural painkillers, endorphin and serotonin. After the considerable scientific research that has been carried out, acupuncture is no longer seen as a complementary treatment or a placebo but as an effective treatment. In conjunction with the needles, sometimes a low voltage electrical stimulation (Electro Acupuncture) is also used to help the process. You do not have to be a member of RP Fitness to book a Sports therapy appointment and are only asked to wear comfortable clothes.
Depending on the treatment area the clothes may need to be unrestricted or sometimes removed (underwear will always be kept on).
The number of sessions needed will depend entirely on the injury and individual.Your session will also include aftercare advice and can sometimes be complimented with our Pilates sessions, coaching or personal training to help with continued long-term improvements.
